We marvel at the creatures who call the ocean home. We feel a thrill when we hear the prop engine of a plane or the hum of a dive boat early in the morning. We stare at  beautiful homes, flip through design books, love on our animals… We want to live a well-layered life, and fill our homes with things that remind us of our adventures, and of places and of these things we love.

You & I have a lot
in common.

And these are all things which led me to become an underwater photographer and to continue my artist passions. I wanted art to hang on my walls and to share my experience with those who don’t dive, so over a decade ago, I borrowed my dad’s underwater camera and the rest is history.

I was born and raised land-locked in Birmingham, Alabama—but I was the daughter of two divers, so I had my fins on and a frequent flier card at a very young age. I’ve been snorkeling since I could swim and a diver for over half of my life, teaching for many of those years. I grew up surrounded by photographs taken by my dad—portraits of fish, my mom silhouetted against sunbursts. So it was no accident when I pursued a diving career alongside (and sometimes instead of) my studies while in college. I earned my Open Water Instructor and several Specialty Instructor certifications all while working my way to my diploma from Auburn University—picking up a camera along the way.

For a little over a decade I had the privilege of teaching and guiding my students through the water, allowing them to explore the wonders of the ocean, while toting my camera along, giving them evidence that they were there. My photography hobby quickly turned into a passion and creative outlet. Shooting underwater became a reason to dive in itself, and I have focused much of my attention and travels into mastering this unique skill.

I'm Rachel George Cleveland

An Artist from the beginning...

My artist journey has been a lifelong story. I’ve been an artist/designer/creator since my kindergarten art class, where I received a first place ribbon in an art show for a marker line portrait of my tennis shoe (which is framed and still hanging in my parents’ foyer).

I’ve dabbled in design since, jumping from discipline to discipline, transitioning from fine art classes in high school to designing and renovating houses in my twenties and thirties—keeping my art for personal use, while doing the occasional painting for family and friends.

This is where the two stories merge.

When diving and underwater photography took a back seat to motherhood, I revisited my paintings and doodles, and the pause allowed me to dive into the  archives of my photos. When a friend suggested I put it out in the word, I built and launched a website with photography galleries and the artwork that few had ever seen, and offered my creative services to my community.

I am constantly evolving as a creative mind, and welcome the chance to offer "my eye" to someone who trusts it. Whether it be a kitchen renovation, wall art for your beach house, or portraits of you fur baby (or even a new cheese straw recipe), I lean towards a timeless, British Colonial aesthetic, and the island-minded uniqueness of an adventurous and well-lived life.
